The Used

THE USED
GALLERY + REVIEW BY DILLY HALSTEAD

Any inclination that the emo/post-hardcore era of the mid 2000s is dead is officially dead itself. I stand outside The House of Blues in San Diego, CA. Looking onto hundreds of anxiously awaiting fans lining up around the block. The Used are playing tonight.

The Utah-based band The Used formed in 2001. Jumpstarting the “emo” and “screamo” scene with their self-titled album The Used in 2002. The band became one of the major players in the scene for much of the decade. 15 years later and they are still touring and making new music for their huge fan following.

Coming off a month long headlining tour with support from the band Glassjaw. The Used announced a few off shoot shows to finish 2017 strong. Shows in Los Angeles and now tonight in San Diego. The band is also preparing for an upcoming European tour that kicks off in early 2018.

6:30 and doors open. Bodies fly down the House of Blues stairs in an attempt to get as close as possible to the stage. The anticipation grows as every minute passes, inching closer to showtime. Finally the lights dim and the crowd goes wild. The Used have arrived. Showtime.

Bert McCracken (vocalist) appears on stage in front of a curtain as the crowd chants and yells “USED USED USED”. As the curtain falls to reveal the rest of the band, Bert spits water high in the air. The set starts out with a thunderous flurry of intensity and light production introducing fan favorites such as “Take it Away”, “Bird and the Worm”, and “A Box of Sharp Objects”.

The set covered songs from the bands earliest work to their newly released and seventh studio album The Canyon. As the set came to an end Bert took a moment to connect with everyone in attendance. Slowing things down with the sentimental track “About you”. Fans were treated to an onslaught of emo love in all forms.

As The Used exited the stage, fans urge for one more song. A moment later, The Used reappeared with the most emotion seen all night. Performing an encore of their first ever released song “Maybe Memories” ending the night.

The Used press on ready for 2018. Continuing to build upon their 15 years of success and emo love.
