RECAP

As Indie Week 2017 roared into the downtown core, many local bars and venue played host to the weeklong event filled with showcases, panels, and industry events. On the night of Tuesday November 7th, local spot The Hideout and neighbouring The Nest hosted the week’s launch party. Revellers slowly gathered to pack the venue as the opening night rang through. The launch party set the stage for artist Poor Nameless Boy, who serenaded the crowd with a rendition of indie and folk rock chords alongside two backing musicians. Following the trio was Pat Robitaille, the solo musician crooned his way through the set and at one point, paying homage to a fellow Torontonian musician – Daniel Ceasar with a pointed acoustic cover of Ceasar’s R&B single “Get You”.

As the evening grew, I made my way over to the Nest and took in the acts beginning their night. Singer Veronica channelled her pop/R&B influenced act with a rounding set including a cover of the chart topping single “Rockstar” by Post Malone. Afterwards, Inuit artist Kelly Fraser proclaimed through her act the Indigenous land Canada is built on. With a performance including throat singing and drumming she declared resistance on colonialist acts utilizing the example of the threats to practices of seal hunting with a resounding creed to “leave us alone”, echoing throughout a personal track.

On Thursday November 9th, I made my way to the Paddock Tavern, the small bar was host to this night’s judged showcase with myself serving as one of the judges, the bill featured bands and singer-songwriters with Emily Mac opening the night. The songstress played a high energy set, followed by Marlon Chaplin, Wes Mason, and Jiants. Each band played through sound issues and managed to make the most of a small stage even so, all bands performed well with Marlon Chaplin taking the win of the night.

As the week flew by with sets scattered downtown, over the weekend I made my way to the Supermarket located in the bustling Kensington Market. The night featured singer-songwriters L.A Foster, Sheenah Ko, and Blood & Glass. The restaurant had a cozy vibe, although the stage set up proved quite dim, L.A Foster managed to get the small crowd grooving and dancing the night away with her eclectic sounds of R&B and pop. She gracefully rang the night behind a keyboard, swaying along to the rhythms and the beats with the crowd.

Indie Week managed to keep the DIY, grassroots feel with the mix of local bars and small-sized venues even with corporate sponsors such as Jack Daniels, Slaight Music, and institutions like Seneca College, various radio stations and more.

Alex Aiono: Gallery + Review

ALEX AIONO: gallery + review

21 year-old heartthrob Alex Aiono lit up the Mod Club on a cool Sunday evening. With the night starting early, the venue filled with young followers of the singer. Alex Aiono has grown a lofty following from gracing YouTube with various covers of hits along with releasing original tracks in anticipation of his debut record due in September.

Singer, AJA9

Opening the night was teen singer AJA9, with a whimsical presence she held her known through covers including “Million Reasons” by Lady Gaga and her latest original track “Right Kinda Love”.

As the venue floor quickly filled, the growing anticipation to the night’s headliner grew. With the dimming of the lights Alex set foot on the stage, as he stepped in the spotlights clad in a blue and white Maple Leafs jerseys the crowd roared and roared. Alex promptly began covering the latest hits he’s known to take his own spin on including “I Spy”, “Isn’t She Lovely”, “No Problem”, and many of Toronto’s staple rapper Drake’s hits including “Child’s Play”, Passionfruit and more. It clearly did not matter the track whether new or old, the crowd commanded singing along with the Arizona native.

Alex made reference to the show being his first solo headlining tour in North America, previous trips to the city and his affinity for his musical journey. He also made sure to share a supportive message for those seeking to achieve their dreams, as far as they may seem which contributed to the light-heartedness and enjoyable vibe to the show.

As Alex played a nearly hour long show, he sang his popular tracks including “Hot2Touch”, as the night rolled on the crowd grew with energy tenfold. Alex ended the night on a high note singing his latest original tracks “Question” and “Work the Middle”. As a young artist, it was clear he commanded the crowd with ease and showed his popularity growing from online platforms. Alex closed the night with his popular mash up cover of “One Dance” and “Hasta El Amanecer”. Check out his music videos for “Question”, “Work The Middle” out now, his debut record is slated for a fall release on Interscope Records.

REVIEW

R5 are no longer the kids on the block. This spring, the quintet released New Addictions, the 5-track EP features the leading single “If”. The song is an ode to their evolvement and growth, ultimately, the band’s sweet sounding pop rock tunes still reign. On Wednesday, June 28th the band made their way to the Phoenix Concert Theatre, with a crowd ranging from pre-teens to their parents, to the young crowd who grew up alongside the band, there was no shortage of excitement as the band returned to the city.

Hailey Knox

The night was opened by two supporting acts with Hailey Knox warming up the crowd and one-half of Alexander Jean, Mark Ballas, fronting as a solo act due to his partner being ill.

R5 last played Toronto in the fall of 2014 thus, making their visit a timely and longed for one. The band played tracks off the most recent release to songs from Louder including the tracks and a personal favourite “I Want U Bad”, “(I Can't) Forget About You” and others. From the opening tracks, the band highlighted their youthful energy and presence as the lead singer; Ross Lynch interacted and engaged amusingly with the crowd. It was clear Ross was made for the stage and showcased his ease with commanding the crowd.

Riker Lynch

After a slew of tracks, the band took a break and Ross Lynch appeared at the soundboard area mid-venue where he performed an acoustic medley including “Repeating Days”, “Waiting on the World to Change” & “Pass Me By”, Lynch also made reference to Canada’s Prime Minister with a shout-out.

After the break, the full-band instrumentals returned with a rendition of “What Do I Have to Do?”/“Valerie”, the band continued into their set with a chosen mix of singles from their discography with the band playing through “Smile” and closing the night with the final track on their 2015 release Sometime Last Night.

Overall, it was clear the band has matured over the years since their formation from their lively instrumentals to their stage presence, as well Ross Lynch has since shed his “Disney Channel” persona to a more genuine, rock artistry presence that appears naturally to him. R5 is composed of the Lynch siblings Riker, Rydel, Rocky, and Ross with friend Ellington Ratliff on the drums.
